A Game for Two Seasons

Gordon Allan

Gordon Allan entered journalism straight from school in Aberdeen in 1951. After seven years on the local newspapers, interrupted by National Service in the RASC, he spent thirty years in Fleet Street, mainly as a sports sub-editor and reporter with The Times. He lives in Carshalton, Surrey.

Ranging from world championships outdoor and indoor to seaside tournaments, Bowls: A Game for Two Seasons is a survey of the last twenty years of the twentieth century, which Gordon Allan believes to have been the most eventful in the history of the sport. ‘We are’, he writes, ‘witnessing nothing less than a revolution in the pastime that Dr W. G. Grace knew when he became President of the English Bowling Association almost 100 years ago.’

Among the changes to have taken place, the author notes professionalism, television coverage, the influx of young players, sponsorship, five-figure prize money, and mixed competitions. This book takes an objective view of the changes and looks forward to a dynamic bowls scene in the years to come.
