Simon Haddad

“Haddad’s research is a welcome addition to literature on Middle Eastern conflicts and refugee studies in general. It highlights important interconnections between conflicts in neighbouring states and supports a regional approach to understanding and resolving conflicts. At the same time, Haddad provides a rare glimpse into political attitudes in Lebanon and his research should encourage more studies of this nature in the region.” International Journal of Refugee Law

“Provides a rare empirical snapshot of Lebanese– Palestinian relationships at the beginning of the twenty-first century… Valuable to policymakers and researchers discussing the predicament of Palestinian refugees and trying to understand the social attitudes of their Lebanese hosts.” Journal of Palestine Studies

“Haddad's empirical research leads him to conclude that talk of permanently settling Palestinian refugees triggers public opposition. Settling 450,000 Palestinian refugees would undoubtedly upset the confessional balance, and require a re-drawing of the political equation agreed upon in the Ta'if Accord (1989). However, the study does distinguish between Lebanon's communities, and it is clear that Druze and Sunni respondents were more ready to accept settlement. Indeed, Haddad's research also revealed that granting Palestinians some form of civil rights, such as right to work, was welcomed by many Muslims. He argues that granting Palestinians basic rights would help ease their socio-economic deprivation, and allow them to enjoy the privileges shared by Palestinian refugees in Syria and Jordan.” The Middle East Journal

“Haddad deserves to be commended on his valuable study. He has provided us with an honest and valuable account of how many Lebanese view the presence of Palestinian refugees in their country. He has opened a window for us to look closely at the silent sufferings of Palestinians in Lebanon. Researchers on the future of Palestinian presence in Lebanon will find Haddad’s study pertinent and challenging.” From the Foreword by Hilal Khashan, author of Arabs at the Crossroads: Political Identity and Nationalism

"A rich and rewarding study, with important implications for both the Arab-Israeli conflict and Lebanese domestic politics. The presentation of original public opinion data is particularly noteworthy and sheds valuable new light on the attitudes and orientations of Lebanon’s different confessional communities." Mark Tessler, University of Michigan

“Haddad's work makes an important contribution to the growing number of empirical works on external, war-related immigration while at the same time providing unique information on Christian/Muslim attitudes toward Palestinian refugee integration in Lebanon - a critical issue in the Middle East peace/war equation. The sensitive analysis offers important insights into the plight of displaced persons as well as that of the countries that host them." Judith Harik, The American University of Beirut
